When choosing a bed, keep in mind the difficulties you may encounter such as getting in and out of bed, turning over, sitting up and generally being comfortable.

Many of the beds with special features are available as a double bed where one side of the bed remains as a standard bed.

Variable posture beds have a mattress platform which is divided into three, four or five sections. They can be adjusted to change the bed's shape or profile according to your needs. Those that are electrically operated may enable you to independently sit up or lie down.

Three section beds slightly raise your knees, forming a knee break and may prevent you from sliding down the bed

Four sections beds provide a more comfortable and stable position as your bottom remains horizontal while your knees are raised to form a break

Five section beds provide more profiling within the head/backrest section.

Both domestic and hospital versions of variable posture beds are available. The domestic ones tend to be smaller with a wooden or padded head board and generally look nicer. The hospital versions are larger with a metal frame, but often have a choice of nursing functions such as safety sides or a tilting mechanism. A useful feature of many hospital type beds is the high low facility, this enables the whole bed to be raised and lowered via the push of a button. This helps the user get in and out of bed and also benefits carers to save them hurting their back.
